What is DESIGN.md?
DESIGN.md is a markdown file that explains a product visual system to AI agents before they generate UI.
The short version
DESIGN.md gives AI tools a compact source of visual truth: colors, typography, spacing, component tone, layout rules, and examples. Instead of repeating taste instructions in every prompt, teams can keep them in one readable file.
Why it matters now
Google Stitch made the pattern visible, but the need is broader. Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, and other agents all benefit from stable product taste before they touch React, Tailwind, or design system code.
What belongs inside
Start with brand personality, color tokens, type scale, spacing, radius, shadows, component rules, page patterns, accessibility notes, and anti-patterns. Keep it practical enough that an implementation agent can follow it.
